Canon Christopher MATTHEWS (Parish Priest)

Canon Chris was born in Wallasey in the Wirral and after working for the Diocesan Youth Service and Catholic Children’s Society was ordained to the priesthood on 26 May 2007. He served as Assistant Priest in The Cathedral before becoming Parish Priest of Sacred Heart & Saint Peter’s parish in Wythenshawe in 2014. In 2016 he was appointed as Parish Priest of Saint Philip Neri parish in Birkenhead and then as Dean and a Canon of The Cathedral in 2021. Canon Chris was delighted to be appointed here as Parish Priest in 2025. Alongside his parish work, Canon Chris is the Episcopal Vicar for Worship, Diocesan Master of Liturgical Ceremonies and Director of our Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. He also enjoys cooking and trips to the theatre!

Canon Pat MUNROE (Assistant Priest)

Fr Pat was born in Cong Co. Mayo, location of the film: ‘The Quiet Man’. It was there that the early seeds to be a missionary Priest were sown. He studied at St. Patrick’s College, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland and was ordained priest for the Diocese of Shrewsbury 7th June 1975. His first appointment to St. Peter’s Wythenshawe, spanned seven wonderful years, where he felt fortunate in learning from a modest and unassuming parish priest on how to – in Pope Francis’ words- have the ‘smell of the sheep.’ He was awarded an MA in Theology and Ministry in 2009 when studied at Ushaw College (University of Durham).
Fr. Pat has served as Parish Priest at Sandbach, Ellesmere Port, Hazel Grove, Northwich, Stockport and Timperley. In each of these parishes he was privileged to work with people of warmth, kindness, generosity, and fidelity. He was renowned for always being ‘on the go’ whether it be to homes, care homes, hospitals and schools. Being strongly associated with the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes over thirty-five years has been key in broadening his ministry, particularly since suffering from a stroke in 2019. Fr. Pat happily stepped down from having the overall responsibility of being Parish Priest to that of being Assistant Priest. Whilst remaining appreciative to the Bishop in being appointed as a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter (in 2021), he is more at ease in being addressed as ‘Father Pat’.
His hobby: Watching sport, reading and reflection.
He enjoys: Meeting people, pastoral engagement – he is a good listener. He also appreciates a hearty meal!

Fr. John DALY (Retired)

Fr. John is a native of Co. Longford, Ireland and like many of his generation studied for the Priesthood to serve on the English mission. He was educated in St. John’s Seminary Waterford and ordained by Bishop Michael Russell in Holy Trinity Cathedral Waterford on the 6th June 1971.
Fr. John has served the Shrewsbury Diocese with enthusiasm and faithfulness until his last appointment as Parish Priest of St Anne’s Nantwich for seventeen years. He was the Director of the Children’s Society for many years, and now he lives in an adjacent Apartment at St. Hugh’s as a happily retired priest. Fr. John is always willing to help us in any way and we are grateful for his kindness and support.
His hobby: Golfing, walking, reading, music and watching sport with good companions…
He enjoys: Visits to Ireland and cooking a good Sunday meal for Fr Pat and himself!
